British weather alert! Be prepared for floods.

The British are known for talking about the weather. However, over recent years we have experienced flooding like we’ve never experienced before.

Areas that haven’t had a history of flooding have been hit by floods, with devastating effects to those people who live and work in the area.  Whether you live in an area that is prone to flooding or not, it is better to be prepared so that you are better prepared to cope with the devastating effects of flooding.

This simple excellent guide will help you to prepare for and respond to flooding.

Preparation Before a Flood

  • Contact List: Keep emergency numbers handy (local council, insurance, Floodline).
  • Check Flood Warnings: Use Floodline (0845 988 1188) to see if your area is at risk.
  • Sandbags: Prepare sandbags for emergency use.
  • Flood Kit: Stock a kit with essentials (torch, batteries, medication).
  • Utility Safety: Know how to turn off gas and electricity; label switches.
  • Gutters & Drains:  Clear gutters and drains regularly to avoid overflowing.

Important Considerations

  • Flood Impact: Floods can make homes uninhabitable for weeks or months.
  • Insurance: Ensure your policy covers flood damage.
  • Act Quickly: Don’t wait for the flood to start—prepare in advance.

During a Flood

  • Stay Informed: Monitor the weather and listen for warnings.
  • Safety First: Avoid flooded areas and be cautious of water levels.
  • Move to Safety: Relocate people and pets to higher ground if necessary.
  • Supplies: Bring essentials if evacuating, as re-entry to your property could take time.
  • Avoid Driving: Do not drive through floodwater; it’s dangerous!
  • Contaminated Water: Floodwater could be hazardous, so avoid touching affected items.

After the Flood

  • Contact your Insurers: Report damages and document them with photos.
  • Clean up: Find reliable help to clean and dry your property.
  • Utility Checks: Ensure gas, electricity, and water are safe before use.
  • Ventilation: Air out your home by opening windows and doors.
  • Taps: Wash and run taps before using the water after a flood.
  • Electrical Safety: Ensure devices are completely dry before turning them on.
  • Restock Supplies: Replenish your emergency kit for future use.

Being proactive and prepared can mitigate the devastating effects of flooding and help you recover more quickly.

Stay safe.
