Protect your property from stormy weather

With the increase in stormy weather in the UK over recent months and years, it makes sense to protect your home and belongings to avoid the risk of you being adversely affected by storm damage.

Here are a few things you should do to protect your property to make sure you weather the storm.

  • Check exterior drains, gutters and downpipes – make sure that water is flowing away easily. Remove any debris and gunge that have built up in your drains so that water isn’t restricted from flowing away.
  • Check your outside drains –  make sure they are cleared regularly to get rid of anything that could stop the flow of water and ensure areas don’t breach damp course heights e.g. driveway, patios or decking.
  • Check for cracks in brickwork or rendering – moisture and frost will soon find any weakness in your walls can cause penetrating damp, timber decay, mould and stained plaster which will cost you ££££’s to repair.
  • Check for any leaks – a small leak can quickly develop into something more serious that can damage windows, doors and walls.
  • Check your loftpop up to your loft to make sure there’s no hidden leaks or issues with your roof or holes where water can seep in.
  • Secure your garden furniturealways make sure items are secure and tied down so they can’t cause damage e.g. outdoor trampolines, patio chairs and tables.
  • Check any trees – check trees on or near your property are healthy and not likely to fall or cause damage
  • Check your roof and chimneymake sure you don’t have any loose or cracked tiles or slates. Flat roofs in particular have a shorter life than pitched roofs so make sure you inspect them for any leaks or damage. Make sure the mortar on your chimney is in good condition and hasn’t degraded.
  • Check fences and gates – ensure your fence panels and gates aren’t damaged and safe and secure.

Beat the storms and make sure your property and belongings are in good order at all times.
